Archaeology Notes

NJ82SW 26 c. 802 236. A stone axe, found in 1887, and a grooved stone macehead, both from Sunnybrae (NJ 802 236) are in Inverurie Museum. They were donated by Miss Duguid, Auchlunies, in 1968. (Undated) information from Accession Register, Inverurie Museum. Another stone axe from Sunnybrae was an exhibit in the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry, held in Glasgow in 1911, on loan from A Henderson Bishop. Made of cordierite-bornfels, this axe is now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (Acc. No: B.1951.56). (Ritchie and Scott 1981). Palace of History 1911; P R Ritchie and J G Scott 1981. (Location cited as NJ c. 80 23). NMRS, MS/712/81. The accession numbers of two stone axes from Sunnybrae in Inverurie Museum are PEHMS: I 1827 & I 3172. The former is an axe that was found in 1887 and donated by Miss Duguid in 1968, the latter is a possible axe rough-out and was donated in 1900, formerly being part of the Kerr Collection. The accession number of a stone macehead donated by Miss Duguid in 1968 is not known. The collection of Inverurie Museum has been re-catalogued, but the new catalogue is incomplete and there is no easy system of identifying the new accession number. Another stone axe from Sunnybrae, which was an exhibit in the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry, held in Glasgow in 1911, is now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (Acc. No: B.1951.56). Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 17 May 2001.
