Archaeology Notes

NJ26SE 51 c. 269 621 A flat copper axe (Coles type A?) 'found 4ft below the surface of the road, near the cross-roads north of St Andrews, Lhanbryde, Morayshire in digging a trench for the pipes of the Lossiemouth water supply in 1905' is in RMS (NMAS) (Acc No DA 84). (Cross-roads at NO 269 621). Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1924; J M Coles 1971; I C Walker 1974. (Flat copper axe of Castletown Roche/Pitlochry type). 'Near the crossroads north of St. Andrews, four feet below the surface of the road in 1905'. Single find. Flat axe, copper, badly corroded, red-brown, sides hammered (?); length 155 mm, butt 52 mm, cutting edge 82 mm, weight 855 gms. NMA (DA 84). P K Schmidt and C B Burgess 1981
