Archaeology Notes

NJ72SE 68 c. 762 201. In Inverurie Museum is a stone axe (Acc. No. AF 14) 8 3/8" (213mm) long, and a polished stone axe, 5 3/4" (146mm) long (Accession no. AF4) found in 1872. Both from Ardtannes. Information from Accession Register, Inverurie Museum. The axes that are held in Inverurie Museum under accession numbers AF 4 and AF 14 (Clough and Cummins ABN 59 and 65, respectively) have both been petrologically attributed to group XXIV, which comprises objects of calc-silicate hornfels from the axe-factory at Creag na Caillich, Killin (NN53NE 1). T H McK Clough and W A Cummins 1988. The collection of Inverurie Museum has been re-catalogued, but the new catalogue is incomplete and there is no easy system of identifying the new accession numbers of these stone axes. The accession number of one of them is PEHMS: I 1012. Information from RCAHMS (JRS) 5 June 2001.
