The Battle of Torfness, in which Thorfinn, Earl of Orkney defeated King Duncan I, the 14th August 1040, was probably fought at "Standing Stone" in the parish of Duffus (NJ16SW 13). Torfness is a Norwegian name, identified with both Burghead and Tarbet Ness, both on the Moray Firth.
A H Dunbar 1906.
No further information was found regarding the battle, but in the museum at the harbourmaster's office, Burghead are a quantity of human bones, flints and a bone pin (No. acc. numbers) from supposed battle-field - possibly the ? neolithic settlement at Easterton of Roseisle (NJ16SW 27).
Visited by OS (W D J) 17 September 1963.
