Archaeology Notes

NJ16SE 8 1858 6306. An EBA flat-axe mould of sandstone, in Elgin Museum (Acc. No. 1945.2) 'was found at the site of the Danish Camp on Cuttie's Hillock near Elgin.' No information on the name 'Cuttie's Hillock' was found, but the henge (NJ16SE 4) in Quarry Wood is known locally as the Danish Camp, and this can probably be equated with the Hillock. S Benton 1952; H W M Hodges 1959; D Britton 1963; Visited by OS (W D J) 10 December 1962. (Mould for flat axe). 'Danish Camp', Cutties Hillock, Spynie, Morayshire. Single find - Mould, finely grained, reddish, eroded. Face A: flat axe, chisel marks in matrix, remains of greenish material on floor of matrix, corroded bronze (?), length now ca. 140 mm, cutting edge 86mm, max. depth ca. 12mm. Elgin Mus. (1945.2).
