Archaeology Notes

NJ26SE 36 unlocated. There are a number of stone axes from Urquhart (parish centred NJ 28 64) in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS]: (i) of indurated clayslate, 2 3/4 by 2ins (Acc No: AF 88); (ii) of greenstone, 3 1/4 by 1 3/4ins (AF 89); (iii) of greenstone, 2 1/4 by 1 3/4ins (AF 90); (iv) of porphyry, 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 1/4ins (AF 91); (v) of greenstone, 5 by 2 1/2ins (AF 118); and (vi) of hornblendic rock, 4 1/2 by 2 1/2ins (AF 119). These axes were donated by the Rev J Morrison between 1872 and 1874, with the exception of AF 91, which was purchased in 1881. NMAS 1892. NMS AF 88-91 have been petrologically attributed to group IX (porcellanite from Tievebulliagh and rathlin, Northern Ireland). TH McK Clough and WA Cummins 1988
