Archaeology Notes

HU27NE 1 c. 28 77. Ten beads of variegated glass were found in a bog at Hillswick, and are now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) (F.J. 54-63). "Similar beads are not known elsewhere as deposits of valuables but they are regularly found as part of the outfit in women's graves in Norway. Thus, the finds ... may be taken as indicating an interment destroyed by the peat-workers. In Norway the Viking burials are occassionally found in peat bogs. Shetelig 1954; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1886
