Original description

MISCELLANEOUS IMPLEMENTS, &C. Cylindrical implement of micaceous sandstone, 8 1/2" long, one end perforated, from North Berwick. Trevor Cowie note, May 2005: In Daniel Wilson's own annotated copy of the Synopsis of the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, (Edinburgh 1849) there is a handwritten note to the effect that number 24A (see Synopsis p5) is not from North Berwick but from a cairn in the parish of Lumphanan [Aberdeenshire] and that it was donated by J. Robertson in 1826. Trevor Cowie note, September 2007: In fact, Wilson too is incorrect. Archaeologia Scotica 5 (1840), 13 lists this donation as follows: January 9 1832 By Joseph Robertson, Esq. A Stone instrument, about 10 inches long, differing from any in the Museum of the Society, found in the parish of Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, about 300 yards from the cairn said to mark the spot of Macbeth’s death.
