Hunterian Museum Object 104400: GLAHM:B.1914.826 - SWORD, Sties, Sanday, Orkney

Description

Description
sword, Viking (in 4 frags); Viking iron sword with heavy iron pommel inlaid with silver, iron guard, double edged blade, now broken with part missing but forged in one piece. Possible remains of wooden scabbard and wooden grip on tang.NB The iron sword was in the possession of Mr Dennison of Brough on Sanday by 1874 and had apparently been found in a mound at "Sties" some time earlier. Presumably this is somewhere near the Broughton area, c. HY/6541. NB A Viking iron helmet and iron axe are also mentioned beside the sword in the Palace of History Catalogue (p.807, nos. 446 and 447) as being lent by J.W. Cursiter and as being likewise from Sanday; they cannot now be traced (Shetelig, 1940 p. ?). It may be that all three objects were from the same Norse burial site at Sties. (EWM). Cursiter ex Dennison (133).
