Hunterian Museum Object 105797: GLAHM:B.1914.701 - PIN, Broch of Lingro, Scapa, St Ola, Orkney
Description
- Description
- Bronze disc-headed pin. The shaft has a circular cross section, the perforated disc-shaped head has a collar round the perforation and raised dots round that. Since coming to the Hunterian, this pin has been attributed to both the Pictish and Norse periods of Orcadian history. However, when the Broch of Lingro was excavated in 1870-1871 by George Petrie, he found clay moulds for casting ring-headed pins of precisely this type, and several pins. This in itself is likely the provenance of this particular piece, and also strongly suggests that the pin is of Iron Age, rather than Medieval, date.
