Hunterian Museum Object 120558: GLAHM:B.1914.555 - BOX; REPLICA, Birsay, Orkney
Description
- Description
- carved wooden box [replica]; Note - Original box in NMS. This box was originally the property of a wood carver or leather worker, and dates to between the 8th - 10th century AD. It may be of either native Scottish or Norse manufacture; the former being more likely. At the time of discovery, it contained various metal tools with wooden handles and had an accompanying flat lid with similar decoration. These were in too degraded a condition to save. 'Notice of a wood-carver's tool-box, with Celtic ornamentation, recently discovered in a peat-moss in the parish of Birsay, Orkney' - James W. Cursiter PSAS 1885-6, p.47
