In the 13th century Sir David de Torthorwald built and endowed the first church of Mouswald, St. Peter's, "hence St. Peter's Well in an adjoining field".

St. Peter's Well, of which there is no surface evidence has now been piped into a nearby stream. The site is in marshy ground.
