Archaeology Notes
NY27NW 11 c. 218 751.
A partly ground, Group VI stone axe, measuring 9 by 3 3/4 in, which was ploughed up on Land farm (NY 214 573) in the field due W of the Roman fort at Birrens (NY27NW 4) before 1895, is in Dumfries Museum (Acc No: 1948-141). It has been thin-sectioned, the section being held in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (DUM 16). (Group VI comprises epidotized intermediate tuff of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series from the Great Langdale and Scafell areas of Cumbria).
