Archaeology Notes

NY08SE 13 unlocated. See also NY08SE 12 and 27. A wedge-shaped perforated greenstone hammer, 8 ins long, 3 3/4 ins broad, and 2 1/4 ins thick, found near Lochmaben (NY 0882) was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) by Col J P Robertson, Callander Lodge, Callander. Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1905 Apart from those noted on NY 08 SE 12 and 27, Roe lists two axe-hammers in the NMAS; one (Acc No: AH 168) 'from Lochmaben' and the other (AH 128) from 'Lochmaben district'. F E S Roe 1967 NMS AH 128 and 168 (Clough and Cummins nos DMF 73 and 74 respectively) are both examples of Class I axe-hammers. Both have been attributed to petrological group XXVII (greywacke from the southern uplands of Scotland). T H McK Clough and W A Cummins 1988.
