Archaeology Notes
NX96NE 29 c. 971 662.
A thin-butted ground stone axe (Group VI), 5.1 ins long by 2.4 ins broad, from Maryfield (NX 971 662) is in Dumfries Museum (Acc No: 10/SA/29). A thin section taken from it for analysis is in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow. (Group VI comprises objects of epidotized intermediate tuff of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series from the Great Langdale and Scafell areas of Cumbria).
R G Livens 1961; T H McK Clough and W A Cummins 1988.
No further information was obtained during field investigation.
Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 June 1964.
This axe was originally labelled 'Maryland, Troqueer'. There is no 'Maryland' in Troqueer parish, but there are 'Maryfields' in Terregles and New Abbey parishes; the latter has been taken as the more likely.
J Williams 1970.
