Archaeology Notes

NY27NW 8 2472 7755. A large, flat-topped mound, which 'has been shaped to some extent by art' rises from the edge of the burn, E of Templehill (NY 2469 7752). RCAHMS 1920 NY 2472 7755. A prominent, flat-topped, landscaped mound, 3.8m high, resembling a motte; no ditch is evident round its base. Miss Carlyle, Templehill, stated that the mound had long been a source of curiosity, and was partly excavated by her father (now deceased) many years ago when the mound was found to be composed of sand and gravel; no conclusions were arrived at. Surveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 October 1967 No change to the previous field report. Visited by OS (IA) 20 February 1973 An axe-hammer from Templehill was donated to Dumfries Museum by Miss Carlyle (Acc No: 1972/37). A E Truckell 1972. Listed as axe-hammer and mound. RCAHMS 1997.
