Archaeology Notes

NX55SW 38 5162 5492. About NX 515550. A rock bearing two parallel rows of cup marks, seven in each row, is near a sheepfank at Cairnholy. A cast of it is in the NMAS (Acc No IA 39). It was overlooked by Morris in 1965. R W B Morris and D C Bailey 1967 NX 5162 5492. The marks noted by Morris were identified on the south face (1.0m by 0.5m) of a sandstone outcrop. They comprise a double row of elongated depressions, each about the size of a human thumb, which are almost certainly natural weathering marks. Visited by OS (MJF) 7 July 1977 Van Hoek did not locate this stone (numbered Cairnholy 7), but appears to have looked for it at NX 5160 5505. Naddair illustrates it, labelling it Cairnholy 14, but gives its NGR as NX 5176 5496. M A M Van Hoek 1995, K Naddair 1995.
