Archaeology Notes

NT43SW 6 4029 3004. (NT 4029 3004) Fort (NR) OS 6" map (1958) This feature was shown by excavation to be a probable Iron Age homestead. It consists of a square, flat-topped platform 30ft across, with a surrounding ditch, originally probably about 4ft below the crest of the external bank, which is well-defined (8ft broad and 2ft maximum height) except on the W where it has been ploughed out. A pit had been dug 3ft into the centre of the interior, probably in medieval times. The entrance, 5ft wide, is in the north. Artifacts found, now in the NMAS, were a stray sherd of Neolithic pottery (Acc No HD 1904), half a bronze ring (HD 1905) and a bronze ring (HD 1906). The latter is datable to about the 1st century AD. RCAHMS 1957, visited 1949; D N Marshall 1969; E H Duff 1962 Resurveyed at 1/2500 Visited by OS (WDJ) 12 January 1966 This Iron Age work is generally as described and planned. Visited by OS (MJF) 12 November 1979 Recent research by B J Murray (pers comm) has identified the Neolithic pottery referred to by McInnes (I J McInnes 1969) and Kinnes (I Kinnes 1987) as coming from 'Yarrow' to be that recovered from the excavations at Hangingshaw and illustrated in Marshall (D N Marshall 1969). Information from RCAHMS (CAA) 14 January 1992.
