Archaeology Notes

NT18NW 6 1302 8705. (NT 1302 8705) Tumulus (NR) (site of) (detail shown) OS 6" map (1967) A tumulus about 40' in diameter and 4' high, standing on the top of rising ground near the North margin of Calais Muir, was excavated in 1885, revealing a luted short cist containing a food vessel and possibly an inhumation at its centre. Around it were found ten cinerary urns containing cremations (one or two of which contained bronze). Many fragments of urns, several deposits of burnt bones and charcoal, cannel coal, iron pyrites and limestone were also found. A continuous heap of stones surrounded the tumulus just within its margin. The food vessel is in the NMAS (Acc No EE 70); the other finds are in Dunfermline Museum: cinerary urns (Acc NO 1968 466-75), burnt bone (1968 476), potsherds (1969 132, 133, and 138), Neolithic (?) potsherd (1969 139), charcoal, cannel coal (1968 461) (M Norgate, Dunfermline Museum, 4 November 1971). H Beveridge 1886; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1896 This barrow was destroyed by tree-planting operations which revealed the mound to have been composed of earth with a few sandstone boulders. Visited by OS (WDJ) 25 February 1959 (NT 1308 8706) Tumulus (NR) (site of) OS 1:10000 map (1977)
