Archaeology Notes

NS98NW 1 9425 8964. NS 9425 8964. A mound here, c. 25.0m in diameter by 1.5m high, appears to be an undisturbed tumulus. OS Reviser 13 April 1954. NS 942 897. A food vessel found in September 1958 during gravel working was donated to Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum by Mr R Wallace Menzies, Tulliallan Sand and Gravel Co. The food vessel was seen lying at the foot of the cutting face made by the mechanical excavator, so it is impossible to say anything of the burial which it presumably accompanied, except that it must have been at least 3' below the surface, for the vessel had survived intact the removal of 3' of overburden. The food vessel, of simple vase shape, is 3 7/8" high and 4 9/16" maximum diameter. (Acc. No. A 5859) J G Scott 1958. The find spot of the food vessel was indicated on the map by Mr Wallace Menzies. It coincided approximately with the site of the tumulus, of which there is now no trace. Visited by OS (D W R) 9 February 1973.
