Archaeology Notes

NS99NW 7 c. 919 964. (Area: NS 919 964) A stone axe was found in 1817 along with a Middle Bronze Age flanged axe (Coles' Class III) on the N side of the River Devon, in the holm-ground, about 1/8 mile below Tillicoultry Bridge. Both axes were donated to the NMAS by Robert Bald (Acc Nos: AF 115 & DC 19 respectively). NMAS 1849; 1892; J M Coles 1966. (Short-flanged axe of Callander type). Single find. Flanged axe, rough, green, butt incomplete (?), blade hammered. Length 155mm, butt 25mm, cutting edge 65mm, weight 470 gms. NMAS DC 19. P K Schmidt and C B Burgess 1981.
