Archaeology Notes

NS99NW 11 934 977. An iron sword of "Anglo-Saxon" type, 29 1/2" long, point missing, is in the NMAS on loan from Dollar Academy (Acc No: L.1972.1). The attached label reads "Found at Harvieston about 1802 in the watermeadow near the farm offices. Presented to the Dollar Institution by John Tait in 1873." This is doubtless the same sword as that noted in the NSA (1845) as found in 1796, when digging a drain behind Harvieston House (NS 934 977) and in the possession of John Tait in 1845. NSA (Written by H Anderson) 1845; Information from NMAS loan accessions index.
