Archaeology Notes

NS73SW 2 7221 3037. (NS 7221 3037) Wetherhill Cairn (NR) OS 6" map (1959) This almost circular cairn, measuring 30ft N-S by 25ft E-W, is situated at the W end of Wetherhill ridge (1128ft OD). There is no evidence of a kerb. When excavated, a food vessel, fragments of a (? collared) cinerary urn containing a cremation, and a deposit of charcoal and burnt bones were found. The food vessel and the rim of the cinerary urn are now in the NMAS (Acc Nos: EE 118 and EA 192 respectively). Visited by OS (JD) 31 July 1954 Wetherhill Cairn is as described by the previous authorities. It is surmounted by a modern cairn, and the residual remains of a probable sheep shelter are visible among the cairn material. Surveyed at 1:10,000. Visited by OS (JB) 10 April 1978
