Archaeology Notes

NS35NW 11 3201 5759. (NS 3201 5759) Tumulus (NR) (Site of) OS 6" map (1958) A food vessel (now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow: Acc. No. A 140), containing burnt bones was found about 1810 by Mr Cochran of Ladyland when he removed a slightly elevated tumulus from near Ford farmhouse during agricultural improvements. In 1855, the remains of the tumulus are described as a small, scarcely observable mound". It was re-excavated by W Cochran-Patrick (letter of 17 May 1855) a few years before 1855, but no further finds were made. NSA 1845 (W Dobie); Name Book 1855; J Macdonald 1878 Visited by OS (JLD) 5 September 1956 At the site indicated is a mound 30.0m in diameter with a maximum height of 2.0m on the N.
