(NS 2442 0801) Cinerary Urn found 1936 (NAT)
OS 1:10000 map (1972)
A collared cinerary urn now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) (Acc No: EA 213) was found inverted over the cremation of an adult male, in March 1936 when ploughing on Kirklands farm. The findspot is about 400' OD, just under 1/2 mile NNE of Kirkoswald. The urn is 14 3/4" in height by 13 1/4"-13 3/4" across the mouth.
A J H Edwards 1936; A Morrison 1968.
Mr T Campbell (43, Merkland Place, Kirkoswald), the finder of the urn, pointed out the find spot on the ground, at NS 2442 0801. The site is near the foot of a long, low, natural mound. Nothing else has been found in this field since the urn was found, though the area has been regularly ploughed.
Visited by OS (JD), 2 December 1955.
