Archaeology Notes

NS25NW 9 2050 5963 NS 2050 5963 (information from A Kennedy, Ayr Archaeol Natur Hist Soc, letter, 9 September 1957). A Bronze Age burial ground was found at a building site in Nelson Street, Largs (later to become No 63, now renumbered 73). Material found consisted of a roughly circular cist, 2ft - 3ft in diameter and 1 1/2ft deep, built of rounded stones and covered by a sandstone flag, containing the remains of seven plain bucket-shaped cinerary urns, standing upwards and containing calcined bones. At least four collared urns were found nearby, inverted over cremations in holes. A mace-head also found was probably in one of the collared urns smashed by workmen. This macehead (Acc No LA 667) and seven urns (08-131 a-e and 09-32 a-b) are in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, donated in 1908 and 1909.
