Archaeology Notes

NR92NW 4 9029 2742. NR 903 276. A short cist, 2ft9ins by 1ft8ins by 2ft4ins deep was found early in March 1959 by Mr J Craig, Bailemargaidh, Blackwaterfoot, when ploughing at Broombrae farm. It lies in a field some 100ft east of the Blackwaterfoot - Kilmory road, and about 150ft south of the Allt Gille Ghagaich. No trace of a cairn was detected. It had evidently contained an adult crouched burial, though the bones were much decayed. Accompanying the burial were a tripartite bowl Food Vessel, a flint flake and two pieces of pitchstone. These were donated to Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum (Acc No: A5916). A date of about 1500 BC is suggested for this burial. J G Scott 1960. NR 9029 2742. The site of this cist was indicated on the 25" plan by Mr J C Robertson (Laggian, Blackwaterfoot). It is only 40.0m from the site of another cist first noted in 1864. (see NR92NW 8). Visited by OS (BS) 6 October 1977
