NO64NW 22 618 496. NO 618 496. A short cist was discovered in December 1970 during ploughing on Hatton Hill Farm. Oriented NE-SW, it lay at 30m OD near the edge of a terrace above a small tributary of the Lunan Water. It was excavated by staff of Dundee Museum, who showed that it had been built of thirteen sandstone slabs, i.e. four main slabs and the remainder being used as pinning material as shown on plan. The capstone lay only 0.1m below the surface. The cist measured 1m long by 58cm broad and 55cm deep internally; its floor, and the excavation pit dug to take the cist, were packed with gravel. It contained an inhumation, accompanied by a beaker of All-Over-Cord type and a small flint scraper, which are now in Dundee Museum (Acc Nos: 1971-543: 1 and 2). At the E corner of the excavation pit, there was a second, smaller and later pit, filled with pebbles. Its purpose is unknown. L M M Wedderburn 1971; 1973; H Coutts 1971
