Archaeology Notes

NO43SE 39 476 323. NO 476 323. A polished axe-head of hornfels found on Barnhill farm has been donated to Dundee Museum (Acc No: 1966- 6). It is squat in form with a convex cutting edge and a slightly battered convex hafting end. One of its sides has been damaged in antiquity. Measuring 2 5/8ins long, the axehead is 2ins across the cutting edge, 1 3/8ins across the hafting end and has a maximum thickness of 1in. J D Boyd 1966; H Coutts 1971. This axe has been petrologically identified as hornfels. T H McK clough and WA Cummins 1988.
