Archaeology Notes

NO44SE 6 484 425. Artifacts from Cotton of Ovenstone (NO 484 425) which were in the collection of John Sturrock, Monikie, sold in October 1889 comprised: (a) a circular stone lamp with a projection at the side, measuring 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 by 2 1/4ins. It was found in 1878 in the foundation of an old house along with (b) a lamp, 4 1/4 ins in diameter, made from the base of a glass bottle; (c) a whetstone, 9 1/2 by 2 1/4 by 1 1/4ins, found in 1880; (d) a round ball, 2 1/2ins in diameter; (e) a stone ball, flattened on one side, 2 3/8ins in diameter; and (f) two pebbles which have been used as hammers. Other articles from Cotton of Ovenstone, now in Dundee Museum, are various flint scrapers and blades (Acc Nos 1969-180(1-8).); three spindle whorls (1969-258-5; 1969- 258-20; 1969-258-21).
