Archaeology Notes

NO45SE 41 496 512. NO 496 512. A short cist was uncovered here, on Reswallie Mains, when ploughing in January 1967. Situated near the top of a low ridge, the cist had its long axis running ENE-WSW. The coverstone was about 1 1/2ft below ground level. Constructed of four grey sandstone slabs, the cist measured internally 3 1/4ft long, 2ft to 1 3/4ft wide and 1ft 10ins deep. Large pebbles and boulders grouped around the cist, and two large sandstone slabs laid on either side of the side-stones, pointed to it having been covered by a small cairn. The cist contained an inhumation, accompanied by a food vessel and a flint knife, which are now in Dundee Museum (Acc. Nos: 1971-179: 1 and 2). J D Boyd 1967; H Coutts 1971.
