Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 102 unlocated. A massive bronze armlet, found before 1901 in Perth Museum (Acc No 13 9) Provenance unknown - presumably Perth vicinity. A Mitchell 1902; M Simpson 1968. This massive cast bronze armlet was found in unrecorded circumstances (presumably in the vicinity of Perth) before 1901, and is held in Perth Museum under accession number 139. It has probably measured 10.2cm in diameter and 28cm in circumference, the back and terminals being 3.6 and 6cm wide respectively. It is of Smith's 'oval' type with expanded terminals which are perforated centrally; the body is split into two longitudinal panels by a channel. The terminal decoration is based upon the lyre palmette theme, executed in lenticular bosss and curved trails which also adorn the body in a complete misunderstanding of an angular wave design. The casting is crude, the workmanship has been poor, and the object has broken into at least four pieces, one of which is missing. M Macgregor 1976. This bronze armlet (PMAG: 139) is in Perth Museum. Information from Mr M Hall (Perth Museum), 24 March 1997.
