Archaeology Notes

NO24NW 5 c24 48 A Class II, MBA bronze flanged axehead, which was found near Alyth in 1957, was lent to Glasgow Art Gallery & Museum (Acc. No. LA 5737.b) by the finder Mr D.C. Turner. It measures 4 1/8" by 1 3/4" max. width. J G Scott 1957; J M Coles 1966 According to local information, Mr Turner has since moved to Goole Grammar School, Yorkshire. Otherwise, no siting information obtained. Visited by OS (WDJ) 7 October 1970 No further information. Mr Turner died in 1969. (Information from D Laverack, Secretary, Grammar School, Goole, Yorks.) (Long-flanged axe of Kirtomy type). Single find - Flanged axe, or chisel, smooth, pitted in places, green, slope stop, butt and cutting edge corroded; length 105mm, butt 20mm, cutting edge 45mm, weight 220 gms.
