Archaeology Notes

NM15SW 6 11 52. Half a mile NW of the telegraph cable signal post, at the N end of Traigh na Siolag (NM 1152), in a sandy recess above the beach, is part of a strongly built semi-circular wall, 3' high, with a slight batter, and 5 yds long, more of it being traceable. This is evidently a raised sandhill dwelling, especially as in its centre, at a little higher level, there is a kitchen-midden. Among the refuse was a bone with a symmetrical hole in its thicker end, some pottery, a few fragments of flint and iron slag, one or two hammer-stones, and a horse's tooth. 1/4 mile further W, also just above the shore, are several stone heaps on a sandy slope, otherwise a most unsatisfactory site, though a piece of pottery was found there. A bone peg, 4" x 1", with a large round hole, from Caoles, was donated to the NMAS in 1907 by Beveridge: Acc No HD 338. (Information from NMAS Accessions Index) (Most probably, this is the bone described above). (c/f NM 15 SW 7). E Beveridge 1903; Information from NMAS accessions index) No trace of the semi-circular wall and kitchen midden among sand dunes. The "stone heaps" are presumably five stone clearance heaps at NM 1118 5306. They are contemporary with surrounding lazybed cultivation. The telegraph signal post is at NM 1167 5156. Visited by OS (I S S) 25 June 1972.
