Archaeology Notes

NM15NE 9 c168 564 to 175 575. (NM 168 564) At the extreme S (Totronald) end of the extensive area of sand-flats is at least one large kitchen-midden of shells, bones and pottery, with a number of horses' teeth lying about. Flint is here abundant, including a few scrapers, and pottery is also common, becoming much scarcer to the N. Hammer-stones occur, and several pins have been found, including a fine one of bronze, short and rather blunt, engraved across its centre and head, and with a small round flat recess on top, which has evidently held a piece of glass or enamel. Another pin was of bone, and a third of brass, precisely similar to that from Gallanach. E Beveridge 1903 No trace of this midden was found. The site falls in an area of mainly grass-covered sand-dunes. Visited by OS (R L) 18 June 1972. The RCAHMS, listing Hogh Bay among sandhill sites, as a sub-reference. Material from here is in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum (Acc No: '55-96) and the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: HD 2032). The item in the NMAS is doubtless that donated by the RCAHM in 1975-6. A grid reference of NM 175 575 is quoted and Hogh Bay is listed among a number of sites on Coll from where the RCAHMS had obtained Iron Age sherds and slag. RCAHMS 1980; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1978.
