Original description

X.2014.12 = X.FRA 6225. Rotary quern from Newstead, Roxburghshire. Trevor Cowie notes, 1 May 2014: the following information was supplied by John Cruse (1 May 2014): this quern has a collar around the hopper and around the U-shaped, radial handle-slot. [Diameter 465mm at the radial handle width; 450mm transverse width; rim thickness 75mm; collar thickness 105mm (measurerments supplied by Jim Wilson, NMS]. John Cruse notes that it is referred to by Allan Wilson, Roman & Native in the Central Scottish Borders, Oxford 2010, 63 (BAR British Series 519) who notes in turn a reference by Euan MacKie [date] and that a similar example was published from Traprain Law by Joanna Close-Brooks 'Dr Bersu’s Excavations at Traprain Law, 1947', in A O’Connor A & DV Clarke eds 'From the Stone Age to the ‘Forty Five’: Studies Presented to RBK Stevenson', Edinburgh 1983, 214 & 217, fig 97/7. John Cruse also notes similar querns with this ‘thick collar- thin rim’ profile from Hayton, E Yorks; Stow, Midlothian; Cadder fort, East Dumbartonshire; and from Ribchester/Watercrookfort (Oxford Archaeology North unpub) – all finds with military activities in their vicinity.
