Original description

X.2009.5.15 = FRA 5351. Heavy iron spike, broken at one end; the sub-circular section at the top tapers to a square section at the tip. L 213 mm, W 15 mm, T 14.5 mm. Newstead. In the course of clearing the Findlay Buildings Cellar, the Scotland & Europe Dept located a box containing a quantity of Newstead finds, primarily ironwork. Some pieces are labelled “Newstead”, and the provenance of others is assured by their similar condition and typological range. There was some clearly intrusive material: an iron cannonball, an iron handled mug, a copper alloy Chinese-style plaque, a Victorian penny, two modern iron nails and two modern pieces of lead, as well as a replica palstave. This could be clearly discriminated from the ancient material.
