Original description

X.2009.5.4 = FRA 5340. Iron nave-hoop with a flat rectangular section; in two joining pieces. D 144-148 mm, H 40 mm, Newstead. In the course of clearing the Findlay Buildings Cellar, the Scotland & Europe Dept located a box containing a quantity of Newstead finds, primarily ironwork. Some pieces are labelled “Newstead”, and the provenance of others is assured by their similar condition and typological range. There was some clearly intrusive material: an iron cannonball, an iron handled mug, a copper alloy Chinese-style plaque, a Victorian penny, two modern iron nails and two modern pieces of lead, as well as a replica palstave. This could be clearly discriminated from the ancient material.
