Original description
MoS Label - (X.1997.752) Coarse pot, Meldon Bridge, 3000 - 2500 BC [MOS List, Movement, II.3.2, September 1997]. Meldon Bridge pottery: Meldon Bridge. PK note: Provisional 1997 register number allocated to MOS object. ORF: IDENTIFICATION - Description: Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman finds from multi-period site at Meldon Bridge, Peeblesshire. Only the following temporary entry is currently on ADLIB: X.1997.752. FIELD COLLECTION - Place: Meldon Bridge, Lyne, Peeblesshire. Grid Reference: NT 2057 4029. Site Code: LY. Site Type: Ceremonial enclosure; cists, cinerary urns; Roman temporary camp. Period: Late Neolithic, Bronze Age, Roman. Method: Excavations. Date: 1974-1977. NMRS no: NT24SW 46. Circumstances of Discovery / Notes: This site was discovered from the air by J K St Joseph, and published as a pit alignment by the RCAHMS, only a small part of the enclosure appearing as crop marks on pre-1967 photographs. However, though not all of the perimeter is visible on air photographs, its overall course can be indicated with reasonable certainty. Excavations carried out in 1974-7 showed that a massive timber barrier some 500m long had cut off a promontory of some 20 acres between the Meldon Burn and Lyne Water. The interior of the site is covered with pits of varying sizes and functions. The domestic pits are generally shallow and bowl-shaped, though originally must have been much deeper; a number produced pottery, of the local Peterborough style. Other pits had contained cremations; in some cases associated with cinerary urns.
