Original description

Finds from excavations at West Water Reservoir, West Linton, Peeblesshire. Type of site: Short cist cemetery. Date: Early Bronze Age. Finds from the Early Bronze Age cemetery (area A). [EQ 1041]. Cremation, cist 7 (= sf 37). Remains of a male aged 17-19. Mass 1210 g. The skeletal age at death of this individual is estimated at 17-19. Some epiphyses were fused, some fusing and others unfused. The sutures of the maxillae showed varying stages of obliteration, while the skull vault sutures had not begun to close. Parts of the skull vault had fragmented into tabular layers, typical for juvenile and senile individuals. All the permanent teeth except the third molars had erupted. For sexing, the small surviving portion of a supraorbital ridge (brow ridge) was found to be slightly prominent. Supraorbital ridges are more prominent in males than in females. No other skeletal elements were suitable for sex estimation. In can therefore only be tentatively suggested that the body was that of a male.
