Original description

Piece of worked wood; unidentified; split; one end sawn, the other roughly chopped; many tool marks. Organic / wood. Said to be from Roxburghshire / Melrose / Newstead / NT 5634. Said to be from J. Curle's excavations at Newstead Roman fort: the donor had come into possession of it through his wife's father, who got it from a painter and decorator in Galashiels called Tate or Tait who knew Curle. 345 mm L x 94 mm B x 43 mm Th.
