Original description

CAMELON COLLECTION. Monumental stone carved with figure of Roman horseman in upper panel & in lower a vanquished 'native', 4' 3 1/2" x 1' 6" x 9 1/2". FJH note, July 1999: This stone has been dismissed as a fake on stylistic grounds by competent authorities (see Keppie & Arnold 1984 CSIR I:4, p 65). Conservation work prior to its loan to Falkirk Museum in 1999 confirmed this: cleaning showed that the surface had been deliberately pigmented, which supports its interpretation as a fake.
