NEWSTEAD COLLECTION. Hairpin of bone with bust for the head. "Rom. Fron. Post," Pl XCIII, 16. [MoS description] Early People. Rare images. (4) Pin head with bust of woman, Newstead. 80 - 100 AD. [Scran caption] This perfectly preserved bone pin was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was worn as a hairpin or a dress pin, sometime between 80 and 100 AD. The head of the pin is a carefully executed bust representing a lady - perhaps an Empress - with a high and elaborate hair style - which would have needed many hair pins to hold its shape. Date: Between 80 and 100 AD. Material: Bone. Dimensions: Length: 11.4 cm.
