F Hunter note, 2014-11-03: from pit XCIV (Antonine) [MoS description] Melting rocks, forging metal. Iron and steel. The Roman smiddy. (4) Forge shovel, Newstead. 80 - 180 AD. [Scran caption] This iron forge shovel was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used by the blacksmith in the furnace to arrange the fuel sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The shovel has a twisted handle and a hammered out terminal to ensure a firmer grip.
