Original description

NEWSTEAD COLLECTION. Strip of leather with one rounded projecting end and cut with 4 feather-like points some 3 in. back from other end. Anon notes: Probably from a saddle cover. SD note, July 1999: Edited from SCRAN full data set. [MoS description] Bloodshed, weapons and heroes. Dressing up the horses. (1) Saddle fragment, Newstead. 80 - 180 AD. [Scran caption] This fragment of a leather saddle was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The strip of leather has one rounded end, which retains stitching holes. Approximately three inches back from the other end there are four feather-like points cut into the leather. Date: Between 80 and 180 AD. Material: Leather.
