Original description

URNS OF FOOD-VESSEL TYPE: Base of urn, 2 7/8" dia., triang. ornam.; Cist in sand pit, Kirkhill, Penicuik, Midlothian.Trevor Cowie notes, 10 May 2012: a burial cist was found in the sand-and-gravel pit that used to exist 200m N of Penicuik Old Parish Church just to the S of the modern cemetery. The pot was donated to the national museum in 1935 by a Mr David Wilson, 66 St John Street, Penicuik (during the 1950s, presumably the same Mr Wilson pointed out the location of the site to the staff of the Ordnance Survey). In 1996 two machine trenches were excavated on the site (presumably in advance of development) but these simply demonstrated that the site had been extensively quarried and that no archaeological remains survived (for details and references see RCAHMS no NT26SW 20; NGR NT 2364 6018)
