Original description

Old brass Key, Gosaford, Hillswick, Shetland. ORF: Bronze Pipe Key. Description: Small copper alloy pipe key, with top half of bow, bottom section of bit, and large section of pipe-wall missing. Note bit's three enclosed rectangular ward clefts. There are two holes in the top section of the pipe. Probably for a casket or a large padlock? Note fine string tied around stem under bow. There is a similar key in the finds from the Finlaggan excavations. It is with the Finlaggan Trust, on the Isle of Islay, Argyll. It is thought to date from c. 1000 - 1500 A.D. From Gosaford, Hillswick, Shetland. Received from the Rev. P.H. Russell, 1907. Material(s): Copper alloy. Dimensions: 25 mm H, 60 mm L, 8 mm W. Registered By: A.M. Allen. Date Completed: 13/8/04.
