Original description

Gold talismanic brooch, 1" dia. inscribed with names of the three kings and JESUS NAZARENUS, Islay. Caption note, February 1993: 14th century.//T. Deniozou note, 2011-02-18, Information taken from Glenn, Virginia, Romanesque & Gothic: Decorative Metalwork and Ivory Carvings in the Museum of Scotland, NMSE Publishing, Edinburgh, 2003: [One of] B1, C42, 41-2 [Angels, Nobles and Unicorns reference] //A plain ring brooch with inscriptions back and front worked by leaving the lettering smooth and polished and carving into the surrounding surface, which may originally have been filled with niello or enamel. The pin is completely smooth and plain with a sharp point, simply hinged by curving its top into a loop around a notch in the ring.3//The similarities in technique and wording of the inscriptions indicate that E20 and E21 were almost certainly made in the same workshop.//NOTES:1 PSAS, vol LVIII, 268.//2 NMAS manuscript Register 1892-1914, 167-8.//3 Graham Callander 1924, 164, fig 3, no 11, 168, no 9, 170.
