Original description

Small octagonal silver brooch, 3/4" dia. illegible inscription,Branxholm, Roxburghshire. f.w. coins of David II & Robert II.//T. Deniozou note, 2011-01-28, Information taken from Glenn, Virginia, Romanesque & Gothic: Decorative Metalwork and Ivory Carvings in the Museum of Scotland, NMSE Publishing, Edinburgh, 2003: [One of] B1, C42, 41-2 [Angels, Nobles and Unicorns reference] //The octagonal brooch is complete with pin, the sides alternately flat and ridged. The inscriptions on the four flat panels on both sides are illegible. Each panel appears to have two letters on it. The ridged areas between the flat panels have sloping sides decorated alternately with oblique lines meeting at the crest and small circles. The pin, a flattened oval in section, has a rectangular collar with a horizontal groove.//NOTES:1 Thompson 1956, no 53, 19.//2 Graham Callander 1924, fig 4, no 5, 166, no 21, 171, gives the inscription as I HE SV SN(front) AZ AR EN VS (reverse).//3 PSAS, vol III, 1860, 484.//JM.
