Silver brooch, octagonal, 1 3/8" dia. inlaid with niello. Fort of Ayr. Caption note, February 1993: [One of] Two silver brooches from Ayr from a hoard deposited c. 1292 - 1360. Deniozou note, 2011-01-28, Information taken from Glenn, Virginia, Romanesque & Gothic: Decorative Metalwork and Ivory Carvings in the Museum of Scotland, NMSE Publishing, Edinburgh, 2003: [One of] B1, C42, 41-2 [Angels, Nobles and Unicorns reference] //The octagonal brooch is complete with pin and its eight sides are alternately flat and ridged. The inscription is on the flat panels on the front, with a tablet flower at beginning and end. The flat panels on the back are decorated with longitudinal wavy lines and the intervening ridges with oblique lines meeting at the crest, the spaces between them punched with small circles. Both the inscription and the engraved lines are filled with niello.
